Using Our Senses in the Outdoor Classroom...

This month we will be using at least four of our senses in the outdoor classroom to observe and discuss the similarities and differences of pumpkins and apples. The descriptive words that we are using in conversation are helping to expand vocabulary too!

Color Mixed Kites...

Windy Fall is upon us! It is absolutely gorgeous weather! Since the kids are having such fun color mixing I thought it might be fun to experiment some more and add a little color to kites!
This is a simple project but gives the kids a little more practice color mixing and an opportunity to start making patterns.

Abstract Leaf drawings....

The upper level worked on abstract leaf drawings today. They started with a leaf template. The art challenges for today were to 1. change the leaf into something else and 2. use primary colored pencils to blend secondary colors.

Color Mixing, Color Math, Color Bursts!

We are working on color mixing! Such an exciting lesson!
We have read Mouse Paint, Color Tree and Monsters Love Color over the last three weeks to prepare for mixing today! The children really enjoyed creating three new colors from just primary colors!

After we worked on color wheels we did color math. ie) R+Y=O, B+Y=G, B+R= P

The upper level did color bursts with a writing component. The mixed their own colors and painted with q-tips. Next they chose three descriptor words and finally wrote one word to describe how their work made them feel.

Chlorophyll Color Changes....

This week in the outdoor classroom we are talking about chlorophyll and the fall color changes outside!  Students are coloring three leaves on a worksheet. Each leaf has less sun and water finally changing the leaf color to red and eliminating the green.  What a great week to be outdoors to discuss this!

Nature Classroom

We have been working in the outdoor classroom creating pinecone bird feeders. The children spread crisco on a pinecone and then dip it into bird seed. It is wonderful to be doing projects outside on these gorgeous fall days! There are more to come.....
