Bowls of Ice Cream

The question of the week is "Do you like your ice cream in a bowl or cone?"!
I mixed shaving cream, glue and liquid water color to make our arty ice cream. The children created a design on their bowl first and then filled the bowl with their "ice cream"! Some added sprinkles too.....

Ice Cream Cone Art

The children have been very interested in ice cream so I thought we could create some cone art today. We used balloons and dipped them into tempera paint to give a gooey melty look!

Monday Calder

We looked at the book Sandy's Circus. It is about Alexander Calder and how began. We discussed balance and what the word abstract means. We also took a closer look on the iPad of some of his really small work compared to his really big work.
I had a tree fall down in the back yard and so I cut slices and added a few screws to each one for our base. Next, students had the opportunity to use pipe cleaners, beads, foam shapes and paper scraps to create their own sculpture to take home.....

Monday Pollock

We looked at many of Pollock's works and discussed his technique. In order to contain the mess indoors we used a box to place our paper in. We dipped the seed filled balloons in paint and dropped onto the black paper....

We used clear CD dividers in a salad spinner ....dripped paint on them... and SPUN like crazy...

We used red paper in the bottom of the box...dripped paint.....added rubber balls and ....rolled the box like CRAZY!

We used liquid watercolor and eye droppers to drop paint onto watercolor paper in splats! One student said it looked like flowers so we added stems!

SPRING!

We planted grass a couple weeks ago and it was time to trim a bit and a little art to take them home!
Students drew bugs and we put them on pipe cleaners to add a bit of pizazz!
Later we used the salad spinner again to spin the center part of our big flowers! Next, we used scraps to make our flower petals!

and a little bit of sky up in the corner :)

Monday Matisse....

We took a look at Matisse and discussed his style of work. We also had at the opportunity to watch a short video clip of him working on one of his paper cut works for inspiration.
Each student started with a silhouette and created their own story using scraps that they cut or tore. There were many stories. One was dancing, one was on the moon and one underwater......

When students were not working on their individual work they had the opportunity to collaborate on a large piece of paper.

One student created a snail like pattern similar to the Matisse work we discussed.
