An Art Bakery or a Bakery of Artists!

Today we took a look at work by Wayne Thiebaud. Students painted some awesome and very tasty looking cupcakes using primary and secondary colors. These would look amazing framed and hung in a bakery... or in the kitchen at home!

Color Mixing!

Lower Level Color Wheel

Upper Level Portrait Series

This week the lower level students worked on color wheels and mixing colors. The upper level knows their color mixing well already so they created a series of portraits.
The enthusiasm for color theory work abounds with elementary students. They are an inspiration to experiment with color!

Ipad/Iphone note:
There is an ipad/iphone color mixing app called Frogs and Fireflies. Not only is it fun for kids, but it also is a great way to practice and learn color mixing.

Amazing Drawings

There was so much enthusiasm for this project!
I collected small toy animals (from my son's toy bin) for students to draw profiles. Before we began I showed students pictures of the cave paintings of Lascaux off of the ipad. I was able to zoom in on images to show them more detail which was very exciting.
We talked about how you can break down a drawing into shapes to create what you are looking at. These drawings were done with such patience, skill and enthusiasm they are such a treat to look at!
Next week we are diving into color and paint!

Snowy Collage

Today students created more amazing art from our giant box of scraps!
They started by tearing scraps from an old dictionary to create an organic shape of a snow bank. Next, they used their scissors to create the geometric shapes for their house. One student created a dog house! In the upper level they started experimenting with making doors that opened!

Ice Towers

With freezing cold temperatures upon us I thought it might be fun to create some front step art. The cold weather cooperated and I was able to start a little village of ice towers. Some did not freeze all the way through but it left a great opening for lights!
Hope you are all staying warm and enjoying this season!
